The Fabled Beasts Collection
This original Chateau Mcely fabric, designed in the timeless Toile de Jouy style, bears the name Fabled Beasts. It was created to celebrate Chateau Mcely’s twenty-year journey from the historic moment it first opened its gates to its very first guests. The collection is the exquisite result of a collaboration between artist Ota Bláha and Inéz Cusumano. Woven into the fabric's pattern is a tapestry of local legends, mythical creatures, and symbols inspired by the Mcely woodlands. It harbors a profound message about the quest for our true essence - a lifelong journey balanced between two realms: the material and the spiritual.
Can you decipher the symbols hidden within the fabric?
The fabric invites you not only to playfully discover its hidden symbols but also to seek your own personal interpretation and indulge in quiet contemplation. Each motif carries its own unique story, legend, or symbolic meaning. Everyone finds something different in them. To inspire you, we unveil at least a few.
The St. George Forest
In local lore, the St. George Forest is a sanctuary of transformation, guidance, and personal growth. It symbolizes a mystical journey toward the light, marking the threshold between the visible world and that which remains hidden. Yet, the true secrets of the forest can only be discovered by those who approach with a pure heart. The surrounding woodland represents a place of profound transformation and personal evolution, revered as a space alive with spiritual energy.
The Dragon with the Pearl
The dragon embodies the formidable power of the material world, while the pearl symbolizes the human soul. Liberating the pearl from the dragon’s grasp signifies the ultimate quest for true enlightenment and inner freedom. In local legends, the dragon also represents the darkness fought by St. George, the patron protector of pilgrims journeying through the Mcely woods.
The Bear
The bear is a nod to honey - a timeless symbol of abundance, gentleness, and the sweetness of life. Since ancient times, however, it has also been revered as the guardian of strength, courage, and inner wisdom. It harmonizes wildness with serenity, protective power with maternal care. It stands as a symbol of a being that understands both the power of silence and the power of transformation.
The Camel
The camel evokes the ancient Silk Road, along which precious treasures and spiritual wisdom once traveled from the East to Europe. It symbolizes endurance, humility, patience, and the grace to persevere even through the most inhospitable conditions. In many cultures, it is also cherished as a symbol of protection and loyalty.
The Silkworm
The silkworm is a symbol of transformation, patience, and rebirth. Its life cycle reminds us that true growth often unfolds in silence, hidden away and unfolding slowly. The delicate silk thread celebrates human creativity, meticulous care, and the enduring beauty that blossoms only with time and patience.
Swans
Swans serve as an emblem of purity and are intertwined with the legend of the fairies of the St. George Forest. Lore tells that these ethereal beings take on human form by night, yet by day, they hide upon the pristine surface of the forest ponds in the guise of white swans, remaining safely veiled from human eyes.
Mushrooms
The mushrooms offer a whimsical nod to a charming local tale about how the world's very first mushrooms came to be, while celebrating the renowned mushroom-hunting paradise that surrounds Mcely.
"Since the early days of the chateau's restoration, I have dreamt of creating a bespoke, original Toile de Jouy fabric for Chateau Mcely. Now, to celebrate our twentieth anniversary, I have finally fulfilled this dream. There was no one else I could have approached but the artist Ota Bláha, who played such an integral role in shaping the very soul and character of Chateau Mcely. I presented Ota with a lengthy, complex, and beautifully challenging brief. My wish was to weave a deeper message into the fabric - one about the search for our true essence, retold through the magic of mythical creatures and local legends. He spent countless hours sketching in Prague’s cafes and during his travels. Layer by layer, motif by motif, the material world began to intertwine with the world of the soul on his canvas, mirroring life itself. Profound symbols now rest alongside playful motifs inspired by local folklore. Should you choose to wrap yourself in a piece from this collection, you are invited to lose yourself in the search for these symbols, to find your own meaning, or simply to immerse yourself in quiet reflection on the messages they hold for us."
