Learn more about this tradition
Carnival customs have their origins in pre-Christian Slavic celebrations of the end of winter. In its original sense, it is the "abandonment of meat" - the word carnival comes from the Italian carne levare, "to put meat aside". Carnival represented a period of feasting and merrymaking between the two fasting periods of Advent and Lent. During the festival, there were dance parties, pig slaughters/roasts, and weddings. It takes place during the Catholic observation of Shrovetide, which culminates on the last Thursday of the season, called Fat Thursday (this year on February 16, 2023), followed by Shrove Sunday (February 19), and Shrove Tuesday (February 21). This is followed by Lent, a 40-day fast that lasts until Easter for the purification of body and soul.
